On these pages you can follow the construction of my Renault 5 Maxi Turbo. I plan to make an update at least weekly. Please note that these pages are translated automaticly. You wil have to live with a funny sentence here and there.
My Renault 5 Maxi Turbo
I do not plan to build an exact replica of the Renault 5 Maxi turbo. That would mean that I would be stuck with the 1.6 liter Alpine turbo engine and the UN1 gearbox from the 80s. I do not feel like using the original drive line, these engines are very expensive and the technology is very outdated. In order to achieve a power level that is close to the power of the original, a real racing engine will have to be built with a limited lifespan as a result. Parts are scarce, another reason not to go down this path. Finally, I do not have much empathy with the technology of the injection systems that were used at the time.
So what will I build?
What I would like to achieve is a car that looks like the Renault 5 Maxi Turbo with which Ragnotti won the Tour de Corse in 1985 from the outside. In terms of technology, I also want to try to stay close to the rally car. That means that water injection and dry sump lubrication are on my wish list. But then with a (more) modern engine and gearbox. I hope to be able to use as many standard parts as possible, that saves costs and the availability of parts is guaranteed if something ever breaks. I will certainly not adopt some choices of the Renault engineers, such as the fuel tanks mounted under the seats. That seems a very bad idea to me. I will certainly not adopt the aluminum roll cage either. Safety was not a priority in Group B, I have a different opinion about this.
